Do Female Dogs Hump?

Growing up, my male pug used to routinely hump a stuffed animal after eating his dinner. It was the evening's entertainment. However, I've never seen a female dog try to hump anything until Cairo started this week.

Cairo, a horny bitch, has discovered the joys of humping my leg. The first time it was funny, but now I'm worried that she likes it and will start doing it frequently. Last night on the couch she wanted to hump my leg except my legs were underneath a blanket. So, she dug away the blanket so she could get access to my legs.

That's when I brought out the spray bottle (a.k.a. the bottle of justice). I use this bottle filled with water to spray Cairo anytime she misbehaves (barks incessantly, tries to chew the carpet, humps, etc). And oh how she hates being sprayed! She'll drop whatever she is doing simply at the sight of the bottle.

It's not a cruel form of punishment and it works very well.

I think the humping is supposed to be more of a dominance thing than a sex thing. Still, it can't be much fun when you're trying to sleep.

I'm going to try that spray bottle trick on Prissy. She is a barking fiend.

I'm not sure what Vet you are taking your dog to but I am a qualified Veterinary Surgeon and I can honestly tell you that Neutering or Spaying your dog will not stop he or she from humping. It is most likely your dog is trying to show it's dominance over whatever he or she is humping or they are anxious about something. Often you will see if you have moved home recently or had a big change in your life or even just moved furnature your dog likes, dogs will tend to hump. It is always best when your dog humps to destract him or her by telling them to sit or calling them into another room or destracting them in some way. NEVER punish or spray your dog with a water bottle. They do not understand what they are doing! And punishment came make humping a real problem, worse than it already is.

I have a 16 month old, 3lb Chihuahua who insists on humping this weiner dog toy of hers. She will, also, try to hump my leg or arm when I'm lying down. I have never had a female dog do this before and do not understand why she is doing this. It is only her and I who live together and she is spoiled rotten. Does anyone have any ideas as to why she does this or what I can do? It's only this one toy. Thank you for any help you can give. Laura So. Cali.

My mother in law brought us a boggle, (boston terrior/beagle) and in the last couple weeks, she has grown quite fond of her bed. She never humped it before she got here and it makes us wonder if we are truley that exciting. We are starting to get annoyed with it. we moved her bed to an area thats not in the open, and this little dog has gone through great lengths to move this bed almost like she wants us to watch. She starts real slow and then its like a rabbit. She concludes with a lengthy nap, next to her bed. I tried to offer her a smoke, but she doesnt seem interested (JK :) What should we do?

My vet has told me that when my female chihuahua humps her toy or tries to hump my leg when I'm lying down, she's trying to show her power.
That she's "in charge and the boss" and that it is nothing to worry about. I just need to tell her "NO!" and use the spray bottle if necessary. I mean she's only 2.5 pounds!!! LOL

A KITTEN???

I have a 6 month old sharpay female, RINA, that at 4 months was humping my 4 year old daughter. Now recently we added a new addition to the family, a female kitten. I caught Rina humping the kitten today and had to see if anyone else had this problem and if it was normal. Thanks, I needed this.

I have a Corgi and he has been the only male dog in the household. Recently we adopted a younger female mix breed and the two play but I've determined that the new female is now the dominate dog. I always thought she was playing with the Corgi when she mounted him from behind to try and flip him on his back but just today I caught her humping the male Corgi! I guess she is trying to dominate him but I'm not letting her jump on him from behind anymore.

It isn't harmful on its own, BUT it can be the start of other behavioral problems. Your dog is trying to establish that she is the dominant one in the relationship. Dogs who believe that they "run the show" in a house often exhibit further disobedience, are hard to control, can become aggressive, etc.

I have noticed with my little Chihuahua that she tends to hump more when she is not getting all of the attention; especially when my boyfriend is over. He is very close to her and spoils her too, but when he isn't paying attention to her... she starts humping! I truly believe it's a dominance thing and that you need to just distract your dog to do something else. PLEASE, don't punish her/him or spray them with water, they don't know what they are doing. They give love unconditionally and that's all they'd like back too!

My 3 month old beautiful little girl lab is so good at it I wish my ex boyfriends had had such good strong moves! Maybe I'll get one of those attachments gay female humans use... (yeah, sorry, bad... LOL!!) She's an alpha female and so am I, but she is winning!

I am enjoying reading the comments on this subject. My dog, Chachi a female chihuahua- too loves to hump this little stuffed dog we call Hector. Although- this is annoying to us, she seems to know that she's doing something inappropriate and tries to hide when in the heat of the moment.

I have a year old boxer and recently she has started to hump things. First when my nephew ran around the house then stopped she started to hump his head. It was quite awkward. A few weeks later, I ran around the house and my boxer ran after me and as soon as I stopped. She had jumped up on the couch and tried to hump my arm. I immediatly stopped her, but I noticed that she only does this when she gets excited and when the excitment automatically stops.

My 2.6lb chihuahua female Mouse grabs my 8 lb male chorkie(chihuahua yorkie) throws him down and climbs on his head and humps him relentlessly. I feel sorry for Mr.Buzzy but it's so hilarious! He will once in awhile stand up to get away from her, but she hangs on for dear life. I know it's a dominance thing and she does rule the roost!

My 18month old cross breed bitch is always trying to hump my leg and it really seems to be a definite sex act ..not a display of dominance !

i have a 4 year old yorkie we have had her for 2 years and she just started humping the blankets on my husbands side of the bed. we haven't moved houses or moved furniture in the bed room at all and i have never seen her do this before...im not sure its she spayed or not so i don't know wat to do. does this mean she is in heat?

It is a dominate thing. My female started the first time we had 3 male men over, who were just all over her playing with her.The next few hours she drags out a pillow and starts humping in front of everyone.Since then its my pillow on the bed, so now i just gave up trying to stop and laughing at her and just gave her own bath pillow to dominate lol..So yes its normal for femals its not a sexual thing, like with some males , even with males its a dominate thing.I had a huge teddy about the size of a 4 year old child who had shorts on it, so my male decided to pull its shorts down to its ankles and have his way with my big ted, for years my poor big ted was molested lol

Oh I forgot to mention my female has had pups and been spayed. So its not a sexual thing. You also need to remember that they're dogs and not humans so don't think of sex like we do.They only do as a procreate status, nothing to do with love or lust. Or sexual frustration etc..
